Trainer Butch Reid, After Celebrating 1,000-Win Milestone, Has Horses Entered In Both Stakes During Monmouth Park’s Opening Weekend

May 08, 2025

Less than two weeks after he celebrated his 1,000th career win, trainer Butch Reid will look to add to that total with horses entered in both stakes races during Monmouth Park’s opening weekend.

Baby Dukes, a stakes-hardened 3-year-old, will make his sixth straight start in stakes company in Saturday’s $100,000 Long Branch Stakes, the feature on a 10-race opening-day card.

First race post time is 12:50 p.m.

Morning Matcha, one of four millionaires Reid has trained in a career that began in 1985, is entered in Sunday’s $100,000 Serena’s Song Stakes, with the 6-year-old mare cross entered in Saturday’s Grade 2 Ruffian Stakes in New York.

Reid said he would make a decision on where she go by Friday.

For now, Baby Dukes is a definite in the 89th edition of the mile and 70-yard Long Branch Stakes for 3-year-olds.

Gelded prior to his first start this year, Baby Dukes comes in off a third-place finish in the Private Terms Stakes at Laurel on March 22. He won his seasonal debut, taking the City of Brotherly Love Stakes at Parx on March 4.

“He’s been a very handy horse from the beginning. We’ve had a lot of luck with our stallion Maximus Mischief,” said Reid. “He ended up with some behavioral issues so we changed his attitude and gelded him.

“He has really stepped up since then. I’m expecting a big effort from him.”

Reid said Baby Dukes was “incorrigible” before being gelded.

“He’s much more professional now,” he said.

Owned by Cash is King and L C Racing, the Pennsylvania-bred Baby Dukes has three wins and three thirds from eight career starts.

Morning Matcha would head into the mile and 70-yard Serena’s Song off a fourth-place finish in her seasonal debut at Aqueduct on April 18. The 6-year-old Pennsylvania-bred daughter of Central Banker has an 8-7-7 line from 30 lifetime starts with career earnings of $1,040,980.

“It’s nice to take a millionaire wherever you go,” said Reid, who has also trained millionaires Vequist, Neecie Marie and Smooth B. “She is doing very well. We just need to make a decision about where we’re going to go with her.

“She came back better than ever. We brought her back knowing the first race off a layoff was a little too short for her (6½ furlongs). That’s not really her bag. But she closed through the lane and galloped out past the field after the wire.

“I was very impressed with that race. It should be a perfect set-up for her next start.”

Owned by Gary Barber, Morning Matcha has tried graded stakes company eight times during her career, finishing second in the Grade 1 Cotillion in 2022 and third in three other graded races.

“The only thing missing from her resume is a graded stakes win,” said Reid. “She has done just about everything else she has been asked to do. The one thing she is missing is that graded stakes win, which is part of the design of what this year is about for her, to get that done.”

Monmouth Park’s 50-day meet runs through Sept. 14. Parking is free throughout the season.
