Second Call Thoroughbred Adoption And Placement Charity Show Set for Oct. 26 At Horse Park Of New Jersey

October 01, 2025

The Monmouth County-based Second Call Thoroughbred Adoption and Placement’s Charity Horse Show, sponsored by Colts Neck Stables, will be held Sunday, Oct. 26, at the Horse Park of New Jersey in Allentown, it was announced today. The show starts at 8 a.m. and continues throughout the day.

“We are pleased to sponsor Second Call’s All Thoroughbred Charity Horse Show. Through Second Call, we have been able to place many of our horses when they are ready to move on to their second careers,” said Richard Santulli, owner of Colts Neck Stables along with his son Stephen. “We are very proud of our relationship with Second Call and happy to help highlight the important job they do.”

The event is open to the public free of charge.

“The show will feature both raced and unraced thoroughbreds from area breeding farms and racing stables who will compete in a variety of fun events,” said Laurie Lane, Second Call’s Founder and Executive Director.

The events will include a $500 cash prize Hunter and Jumper Classic, Dressage, Hunters and a Costume Class for the Halloween weekend.

“It’s a chance for us to showcase the versatility and athleticism of the thoroughbred breed to horse lovers as we continue our mission to find forever homes for thoroughbreds who are retiring from on-the-track racing careers,” said Lane. “We’ll have events for horses newly retired from the racetrack as well as our veteran retired thoroughbreds, the ones we call `war horses.’

“These retired thoroughbreds have earned more than $100,000 in their careers and had more the 50 starts. They are special, and we are honored to have them compete with their owners in ‘in-hand’ events.”

Lane said a new team competition called “Battle of the Barns” has been added to the show. It is a team competition for owners and trainers who enter more than one horse from their barn. There is no entry fee to enter for a barn.

Scoring is an average point system making it fair for teams of all sizes. Winners get a championship trophy and a pizza party.

Second Call hopes to raise more than $25,000 during the day from sponsorships and entry fees to support their annual budget.

Second Call has placed nearly one thousand Thoroughbreds since it was established in 2012.

The horse show will include opportunities for family photos with thoroughbreds by Taylor Ejdys, a member of the Equi-Photo group – the official Monmouth Park track photographer – as well as some special activities for children.

Second Call, Monmouth Park’s exclusive after-care program, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit thoroughbred adoption and placement program committed to the welfare of New Jersey’s retired racehorses. It is part of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, receiving accreditation in 2020.
