September 16, 2023

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Phantom Smoke broke alertly and never faced a serious threat in rolling to a 2¼-length victory in Saturday night’s $42,000 featured allowance during the Monmouth-at-Meadowlands meet.

Confidently handled by Jose Gomez, the 4-year-old gelded son of Ghostzapper ripped through fractions of :22.17 and :44.98, opening up on his seven rivals as he did.

The winning time for the five furlongs over a firm turf course was :56.65.

Trained by Michael Miceli and owned by George Anthony, Phantom Smoke was claimed four starts for $45,000. The New York-bred now shows a 4-4-2 line for 15 career starts.

He returned $8.80 to win.

Even-money favorite Outlaw Country rallied for second, 2¼ lengths ahead of CC Goldrush in third.

The all-turf Monmouth-at-Meadowlands meet resumes racing on Friday, Sept. 22. First race post time is 7 p.m.

The 10-day meet runs Fridays and Saturdays through Oct. 14.
