East Avenue, Bishops Bay Set To Square Off Again In Saturday’s $150,000 Grade 3 Philip H. Iselin Stakes
August 13, 2026
After being separated by mere inches the last time they squared off in the Grade 3 Salvatore Mile two months ago, with East Avenue prevailing over Bishops Bay, the two millionaires will stage round two on Saturday at Monmouth Park, with an added twist:
Chunk of Gold, a proven graded stakes runner, will also be part of the mix for Saturday’s featured Grade 3, $150,000 Philip H. Iselin Stakes.
The 91st edition of the Iselin Stakes is expected to have a compact field of four, with longshot Sergeant Capps opting for a softer allowance spot instead, according to trainer Peter Synnefias, and the Bill Mott-trained Stars and Stripes going in today’s Birdstone Stakes at Saratoga.
East Avenue, a Grade 1 winner, was able to rally from last under jockey Tyler Gaffalione to catch Bishops Bay at the finish of the Salvatore Mile on June 13.
Trained by Brendan Walsh, East Avenue has banked $1,131,245 in an 11-race career that includes a victory in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity.
But East Avenue, A Godolphin homebred, has finished behind Chunk of Gold twice in their three previous meetings. That includes the Grade 3 West Virginia Derby that Chunk of Gold won last year as (East Avenue was fifth) and the Risen Star Stakes, where Chunk of Gold was second while East Avenue staggered home 10th.
East Avenue made amends in the Salvator Mile – his third graded stakes win, with jockey Tyler Gaffalione scheduled for the return mount.
Chunk of Gold returned following a seven-month layoff to finish second in a $100,000 optional claimer at Churchill Downs on June 28.
Trained by Ethan West, Chunk of Gold has a win, three seconds and a third in six previous graded stakes tries.
A $2,500 yearling purchase, Chunk of Gold could become a millionaire with the $90,000 winner’s share of the Iselin.
Jaime Torres is listed to ride.
Bishops Bay, meanwhile, has nine wins and five seconds from 16 career starts, with earnings of $2,542,800.
Trained by Brad Cox, the KAS Stables 6-year-old has won the Grade 2 Cigar Mile and three Grade 3 races. The Kentucky-bred son of Uncle Mo was looking to repeat in the Salvator Mile before being nabbed at the finish.
La Frost, who is 3-for-4 at Monmouth Park, will round out the field after the Terri Pompay-trainee won an optional $40,000 claimer on July 19.
The mile and a sixteenth Iselin Stakes goes as the fifth race on the eight-race card.
First race post time is 12:50 p.m.
