14-1 Giant James Rallies Late To Win Saturday Night’s Monmouth-At-Meadowlands Featured Allowance Optional Claimer
September 27, 2025

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Giant James, who broke a nine-race losing streak in his last start just 13 days ago, rallied strongly in mid-stretch and out-finished 6-5 favorite Leo Monte by 1¼ lengths to win Saturday night’s featured $52,500 allowance optional claimer during the Monmouth-at-Meadowlands meet.
The one-mile grass race for Jersey-breds was marred near the finish when Micro Brewsky, appearing to make a winning move along the rail late, stumbled and pitched jockey Carol Cedeno to the turf.
Cedeno was conscious and gave a thumb’s up as she was taken off the track on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance.
She was taken to Hackensack Medical Center complaining of pain to her wrist and ribs. No further information on her condition was immediately available.
Giant James, sent off at 14-1 in the field of 10, came flying late to win for jockey Fernando Jara– just as he did in his last race.
The winning time was 1:35.68.
Cassation, a 47-1 shot, set most of the early fractions under pressure from Just Comply, taking the field through fractions of :22.66, :46.00 and 1:104 for six furlongs and was still leading until the final sixteenth before grudgingly yielding late to the closers.
Cedeno and Micro Brewsky appeared to be winners until the mishap.
A 6-year-old son of Giant Surprise who is owned by Bergen Stables, Giant James won for the third time in 21 career starts.
Leo Monte held second by a neck over Cassation.
Racing resumes during the all-turf Monmouth-at-Meadowlands meet on Friday, Oct. 3. First race post time is 7 p.m.
