Trainer Jim Ryerson Returning “Home” On Sunday With Quiet Confidence Set To Go In The Incredible Revenge Stakes
August 01, 2025

After being a fixture on the Monmouth Park backstretch from the time he got his trainer’s license in 1976 until 2012, Jim Ryerson welcomes any opportunity these days to return to the place he calls home – something he means in the literal sense, since he still owns a house in Oceanport.
He has a reason to do so on Sunday with Quiet Confidence set to go in the Incredible Revenge Stakes, a 5½-furlong turf dash for fillies and mares, 3 and up.
“She’s doing well,” said Ryerson, now New York based. “We’re excited for this opportunity. There are some nice fillies in this race. We’ll see how she lines up against them and how it goes.
“I don’t get the chance to come back to Monmouth Park much anymore so I am happy to have the chance to do this with her.”
The feature on Monmouth Park’s nine-race card on Sunday has attracted a field of 10, as well as one main track only entrant and an also eligible possibility.
For Quiet Confidence, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Nyquist, the Incredible Revenge marks her first stakes try. She comes in off two straight grass sprint wins in New York after her first eight career starts were on the dirt.
Originally trained by Brendan Walsh, Quiet Confidence was shifted to Ryerson in March after owner Bob Hahn (Conover Stables) bought out his partners for $57,000 and took sole ownership of the 4-year-old filly.
After two dirt tries under Ryerson, she was tried on the grass, winning her first start on the turf at Aqueduct on June 12. She followed that with a 2½-length score against allowance company on the grass on July 3 at Saratoga.
“I tried her on the dirt when I first got her. She ran well in her first start for me and then she ran poorly,” said Ryerson, who has 19 horses stabled at Saratoga and six at Belmont Park. “Bob Hahn asked me to try the turf with her. You never know how it’s going to work out but we figured we had to give her a chance.
“I have to admit I am a little surprised at what she has done – not that I didn’t believe she would do well on the turf. She has been good both times. Her last race especially was a good one.”
Based on her two grass races Ryerson said that Quiet Confidence has earned a chance in stakes company.
“We elected to try this spot versus waiting any longer,” said Ryerson. “Bob is trying to get some black type for her. This is a good time to try her in a spot like this.”
The field includes Alla Breve, second in the Jameela Stakes in her seasonal debut on June 21 at Laurel and a proven turf sprinter; the Miguel Clement-trained Love Appeals; Great Venezuela and Tiffany Gold, both shipping in from Gulfstream for trainer Victor Barbosa, and Simply Stated, trained by Michael Trombetta.
Eric Cancel is listed to ride Quiet Confidence.
“She has run well on two different turf courses, so that isn’t a problem,” said Ryerson. “You run without Lasix in stakes races, so that will be the first time in a while for her doing that. She has to prove she can handle that end of it.
“I think she will be fine but you never know until they do it. This will be a good test for her.”
