To appreciate jockey Edwin Gonzalez’s near obsession with both keeping busy and reaching 200-plus wins for the year, one look at his riding schedule for the past seven days is evidence enough.

On Monday, he rode at Gulfstream Park. On Tuesday and Wednesday, after flying in from Florida, he rode at Presque Isle. On Thursday, he drove from Erie, Pa., to Delaware Park to ride during the day and then drove to Penn National to ride that night.

And Friday through Sunday he was at Monmouth Park, with the peripatetic 34-year-old riding in seven races – for seven different trainers — on the eight-race Sunday card (he was scheduled to ride in all eight, but Leftover Sushi was a late scratch in the sixth race).

Gonzalez won at least one race at all five racetracks over that one-week span, finishing his week with three wins and two seconds on Sunday at Monmouth Park.

“I want to be riding seven days a week,” he said. “At Gulfstream (his base) things have slowed down and I want to keep busy. I’ll ride anywhere I can.

“One of my goals is to win 200 races this year. So I am trying to take advantage of all of the opportunities I can get.”

Gonzalez, who won 442 races in his native Puerto Rico before coming to ride in the United States in 2009 at Penn National, has reached the 200-win milestone once previously in his career. That was in 2019, when he won the first of two consecutive Penn National riding titles.

He added the 2025 Gulfstream Park Sunshine Meet title to a career that has produced 2,177 wins in the United States.

“As long as the tracks are open (in the Northeast) I’m going to ride here,” said Gonzalez, who will return to the Gulfstream Park jockey colony in the fall. “I have my wife (Karina) travelling with me so I always have company. It makes it easier when you have someone with you when you do all of that driving.”

Since parachuting into Monmouth Park more than halfway through the meet, he has won 12 races from 32 mounts. That’s good for fifth in the jockey standings.

Sunday’s schedule at Monmouth Park saw him riding for Jose Sanchez, Miguel Clement, Mike Dini, Peter Synnefias, Jorge Delgado, Phillip Capuano and Juan Carlos Avila.

Overall, he has 135 wins this year.

“I’m very happy with how I am doing at Monmouth Park,” he said. “I came here more than halfway through the meet and I am in the top 10 in the standings. It’s been a good summer here.

“I know most of the people at Monmouth. That helps. People are giving me opportunities here and they know I want to work. I worked seven horses this morning. I need to keep busy. I work horses in the mornings and then ride in the afternoons – and sometimes at night. I don’t want to miss out on any opportunities.”

In 2023, when business slowed at Gulfstream, he shifted his tack to now-defunct Golden Gate Fields. Have mount, will travel.

In Puerto Rico he won four graded stakes, including the Grade 1 Clasico Dia del Veterano. He has won three graded stakes during his 18 years in the U.S.

“The more I ride and win the more people notice,” he said. “Hopefully that leads to riding better horses. That’s what every jockey wants.

“I like riding horses and I like winning races and keeping busy. This could be one of my better years so I am trying to keep it going by riding as much as I can.”
