East Rutherford, N.J. – Pewter Stable’s What the Chub took the lead from the start and never looked back, winning the $37,500 allowance feature for New Jersey breds on opening night of a 13-day all-turf meet at the Meadowlands.

With showers persistent throughout the early part of the card, What the Chub went five furlongs over “yielding” turf in 1:01 flat and paid $18, $7.80 and $6.40.  It was 3 ¼ lengths back to Unruly Heir, who completed the $117.40 exacta and paid $5.80 and $4.40.  Mello Groove was nearly another length back in third, good for a $6.40 show mutuel.

Trained by Kathleen DeMasi and ridden by Jose C. Ferrer, What the Chub is a 5-year-old gelding by Hey Chub from the Slew City Slew mare Tanta Bertie.  He now sports a record of 6-3-2 from 22 career starts.
