Dear John Brings Turf Pedigree Into Friday Feature

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

The Big M kicks off an eight-day all-turf Thoroughbred meet this Friday and while the program will list 14 runners, 10 will get a chance to take home the top prize in the fifth race feature, a $30,000 allowance/optional claiming contest.

Among those entered in the body of the field is Dear John, who looks to be in top form for trainer Gregg Sacco.

“He came back with a quarter-crack after his race two back (July 7 at Monmouth Park),” said Sacco.  “We gave it time to heal and his return race was exactly what we expected from him.”

That return race was a nearly three-length score over the Monmouth turf on Aug. 12, when sent off the 7-5 favorite.

“He’s all turf,” Sacco added.  “He’s a big, beautiful horse with a great turf pedigree.  I expect he’ll run another big one on Friday.”

In the Friday feature, Dear John will break from post eight with jockey Jose Ferrer aboard for the first time.

As for returning to the Meadowlands, “I think it’s great,” Sacco said.  “I have a lot of fond memories of going to the Meadowlands with my father and my brother.  We were there opening night (Sept. 6, 1977) and it’s always fun to go back.”
