Oceanport, N.J. – Harris Racing LLC’s Mel Beach sat off the early pace before bursting through on the inside and drawing off to a 1 ¾ length score in the $34,000 allowance/optional claiming feature at Monmouth Park on Saturday.

Trained by Eddie Plesa Jr., Mel Beach covered the five furlongs over firm turf in :55 flat and paid $9.60, $4.20 and $2.60.  Just Chillin Boss, the favorite in the field of six colts and geldings, completed the $33 exacta and returned $3.40 and $2.40.  It was another length and a quarter back to It’s Time to Laugh, who paid $2.80 to show.

“There was a lot of speed in the race and my instructions were to let him break, settle into position, sit there and make one move,” said winning jockey Angel Serpa.  “He did everything right and really responded.  My horse ran great.”

Mel Beach, a 3-year-old gelding by Pomeroy from the Pentelicus mare Stars in Your Eyes, now sports a record of 3-6-0 from 15 career outings.

Live racing continues at Monmouth Park on Sunday, Sept. 23 – gates open 11:30 a.m., first post 12:45 p.m.
