Sal Verderame, who captured the first and third legs of the Simulcast Series Challenge, used his patented late run to capture the SSC Invitational Finals on Saturday, April 28 to qualify for the DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas in January 2013.
By besting the field of 43 other qualifiers, Verderame also picked up $2,500 cash.
Joe Perry, who finished in the top 15 in all three of the SSC qualifiers and therefore had three entries in the final, finished second and will join Verderame in Las Vegas.
After starting the day with a $200 bankroll, Verderame found himself mid-pack with $351.50 with two races remaining in the contest which featured events from Belmont, Calder and Tampa Bay. Verderame risked it all and placed $351 to win and the eventual winner of Tampa Bay’s last. The gamble was enough to move his bankroll to $1,650.20, enough to hold off Perry, who ended with $1,470.60.
Monmouth Park’s next handicapping contest will be held on Preakness Day, Saturday, May 19. The $200 event will reward the top two finishers with a spot in the NHC.
