Oceanport, N.J. – With Hurricane Irene expected to bear down on New Jersey over the weekend, Monmouth Park has cancelled live and simulcast racing for Saturday, Aug. 27 and Sunday, Aug. 28.  Earlier in the day, the Oceanport racetrack announced the cancellation of its Sunday program.

“It’s in the best interests of our patrons, our employees, our horsemen and of course the horses to take this proactive step to ensure everyone’s safety,” said Bob Kulina, vice president and general manager of Monmouth Park.  “With road closures and evacuations underway, it simply made sense to cancel Saturday as well as Sunday.”

Hurricane Bertha, in 1996, was the last time Monmouth Park canceled live racing due to an impending hurricane.
