A pair of 2-year-old stakes are on tap for Saturday at Monmouth, both featuring New Jersey-breds, one for colts and geldings, the other for fillies. Each field has drawn eight entrants, with Gregg Sacco sporting a non-coupled entry in the colts division and the impressive maiden winner Ima Jersey Girl in the fillies event.
“She came out of her maiden win perfectly,” said Sacco of Ima Jersey Girl. “It’s quick to run her back, but she’s doing fantastically. It’s a tough race, as it should be, but I really like the way she’s coming into it.”
In her lone start on Nov. 6, Ima Jersey Girl sat off the early pace, before making a powerful move around the far turn and scoring at the wire by 4 ½ lengths. The time for the six furlongs over the muddy main track was a good 1:11 1/5.
A homebred filly owned by John Brunetti’s Red Oak Stable, Ima Jersey Girl is by Lightnin N Thunder from the French Deputy mare Ubetwereven. She will break from post three on Saturday with jockey Paco Lopez climbing back aboard.
One race after saddling Ima Jersey Girl, Sacco will be back in the paddock to tack up a pair of runners in the other Jersey Juvenile, this one attracting eight colts and geldings. Sacco’s Loving Dove will break from the rail, while Voodoo Charm has drawn the seven post.
