Patricia, Thomas and Anthony Ryan’s Tommy’s Memory broke on top and never looked back, taking his five rivals gate to wire to win the $60,000 allowance/optional claiming feature at Monmouth Park on Sunday.
Trained by Anthony Ryan, Tommy’s Memory covered the six furlongs over a fast main track in 1:10 1/5 and paid $11.40, $7.20 and $6.40. It was a neck back to runner-up Joey P., who paid $5.80 to place and $5 to show. The exacta came back $65.20, with Hop Skip and Away another length and half back in third, good for an $8.80 show mutuel.
“He broke sharp and took me right to the lead,” said winning jockey David Amiss. “That’s very uncharacteristic for him. Usually he likes to stalk the pace. I wasn’t worried until the last 1/16th because he hadn’t run since July. I waited as long as I could and he had enough left.”
Sunday’s victory was the fifth in eight starts for Tommy’s Memory, a 4-year-old gelding by Good and Tough from the Nelson mare Princess Kay.
