Jockey Jorge Panaijo recorded his first victory in the United States in his 30th mount with a gate-to-wire score aboard Ghost Magi in Saturday’s 5th race at Monmouth Park.

Panaijo, 28, had been 0-for-21 this year following an 0-for-8 start in 2017. He won 73 races, including one stakes, in his native Peru before coming to the U.S. Through an interpreter, Panaijo said he intends to stay at Monmouth Park for the remaining 15 live racing cards of the meet to see if he can generate business and build some momentum.

Ghost Magi, trained by Gennadi Dorochenko, paid $17.20 to win. The 4-year-old filly covered the mile over a fast track in 1:40.13.
