Big Brown
Race Summary
Big Brown made his return to the races after a disappointing end to his Triple Crown bid a successful one, getting up in the final strides against Coal Play. Turning for home the scene looked eerily similar to that in the Belmont stakes, a long-shot donning the colors of Robert LaPenta seemed to be opening up at will, with Big Brown struggling to advance his position. That’s when he showed his heart, digging in down the stretch with Kent Desormeaux asking for everything he had, and finally, inside the 70-yard pole, Big Brown was clear of Coal Play and drawing away as the overwhelming 1-5 favorite. Big Brown took home the Eclipse Award for Top 3-year-old, even after being retired before the Breeders’ Cup. He was given the nod over Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Raven’s Pass.
Big Brown returned to Monmouth Park in September for the Monmouth Stakes on the turf. Over 17,000 fans turned out to cheer on Big Brown as he registered another victory at Monmouth Park.
