Coronado's Quest

Race Summary

Trainer Shug McGaughey’s rambunctious colt Coronado’s Quest was the toast of the 1998 Haskell as he held off the late charge of Belmont Stakes winner Victory Gallop, who just two months before spoiled Real Quiet’s bid for the Triple Crown. Ridden by Mike Smith and owned by Stonerside Stable and Stuart Janney, Coronado’s Quest paid $3.40 and topped a $5.40 exacta. Grand Slam finished third.
Early on that day’s race card, Smith fell from his mount during the running of a turf race forcing him off all his remaining mounts, except the Haskell.
Following the running of the race, jockey Gary Stevens, who rode runner-up Victory Gallop, claimed foul against the winner, but that claim was denied.
