Touch Gold

Race Summary

Belmont Stakes winner Touch Gold sat last most of the way around before moving around the far turn and then drawing away from his competitor’s to take the Haskell by a length and a half. Sent off the slight favorite at 6-5, the Deputy Minister colt carried co-highweight of 125 pounds and Hall of Fame jockey Chris McCarron to the winner’s circle for the 1997 Haskell.
Trained by David Hofmans and owned by Stonerside Stable and Frank Stronach, Touch Gold paid $4.40 and topped a $23.40 exacta over Anet. Free House, who was third in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes and second in the Preakness was third in this year’s Haskell.
Rounding out the field of five were eventual graded stakes winner Tale of the Cat and Frisk Me Now, a multiple graded stakes winner.
