Race Summary

Multiple Eclipse winner Skip Away was odds-on in his Haskell win of 1996. Ridden by Jose Santos, Skip Away entered the Haskell after running in all three Triple Crown events and then winning the Ohio Derby. For his length victory over Dr. Caton, the colt by Haskell winner Skip Trial returned $3.20 and topped $14.80 exacta.
The Sonny Hine trainee would go on to win the Jockey Club Gold Cup over Cigar as well as the 1997 Breeders’ Cup Classic. His career record of 37 18-10-6 gave him earnings of $9.6 million for owner Carolyn Hine.
The race all marked the first of three years that Buick sponsored the race and was hence named the Buick Haskell in 1996, 1997 and 1998.
