Bet Twice

Race Summary

In one of the most memorable Haskell’s in history, the top three three-year-old Thoroughbreds of 1987 came to Oceanport for a classic showdown. Lost Code and jockey Gene St. Leon broke on top and led to the top of the stretch before Belmont Stakes winner Bet Twice and Craig Perret took command. Alysheba, victor of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, began to close on the outside, but could not catch Bet Twice as the Jimmy Croll trainee won the Haskell by a neck. Alysheba was another neck in front of Lost Code. Bet Twice was sent off as the 6-5 favorite in a race that offered no show wagering on the field of five. Alysheba got even with his familiar rival the following year at Monmouth, winning the Iselin Handicap by three-quarters of a length.
