Race Summary

The first running of the race as the Haskell Invitational Handicap featured an all-New Jersey finish. Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Willcox’s Five Star Flight, trained by Ben Perkins Sr., was five lengths better than S K S Stable’s Lord Avie, trained by Danny Perlsweig. Craig Perret took the first of his three Haskell victories aboard Five Star Flight, who paid $5.20 as the second choice. Lord Avie, who had been the champion 2-year-old colt of 1980, was the 1-2 favorite and completed a $6.80 exacta.
