Coastal

Race Summary

The favorite made no mistakes in the 1979 running of the Monmouth Invitational. William Haggin Perry’s Coastal, who had upset the Belmont Stakes in June, went off the 3-10 favorite at Monmouth and was much the best on a drying-out track, scoring by three lengths over second choice Steady Growth. This was the first year exacta wagering was taken on the Monmouth Invitational, and with the favorites running one-two, the payoff was a meager $4. David Whiteley trained Coastal and Ruben Hernandez was the winning rider. Steady Growth, who had won the Arlington Classic earlier in the summer, was named champion 3-year-old of Canada in 1979.
