West Coast Scout

Race Summary

The fourth running of the Monmouth Invitational on Aug. 7, 1971, resulted in a festival of longshots. The winner, at 20-1, was Oxford Stable’s West Coast Scout, trained by Mervin (Magoo) Marks and ridden by Larry Adams. The colt, who paid $42.40 to win, raced the nine furlongs in 1:48, a stakes and track record that stood only until 1976. Northfields was second at 14-1 and the filly Alma North, part of a 26-1 entry with Twin Time, was third. Pass Catcher, the Belmont Stakes winner, finished eighth, two and a half lengths in front of Jim French, who started the $2.10-1 favorite in the field of 12.
