Ballustrade

Race Summary

The rich race for 3-year-olds started life in 1968 as the Monmouth Invitational Handicap, and the first running kicked off the event with a pari-mutuel bang. T.R. Trout’s Balustrade, a 33-1 chance, held off the late charge of the 20-1 Chompion in the stretch to score by three-quarters of a length. Balustrade, trained by Morris Dixon and ridden by Eric Walsh, paid $68.20 to win. Chompion paid $19.60 to place, but unfortunately for lovers of gimmick bets, there were no exactas on the Haskell until 1979. Funny Fellow was third, and Iron Ruler, the 2-1 favorite, ran fourth. The horse who ran ninth in the Invitational didn’t distinguish himself that warm afternoon of August 3, but Exclusive Native went on to fame and glory as the sire of Affirmed, Triple Crown champion of 1978.
