In a race that truly made Monmouth Park history, War Emblem shipped to Oceanport to become the first Kentucky Derby winner ever to take the Haskell. Trained by Bob Baffert and owned by the Thoroughbred Corp., War Emblem, with Victor Espinoza in the irons, led every step of the way in the mile and an eighth event and returned $2.60 as the 1-5 favorite. Magic Weisner, second earlier in the year in the Preakness, closed down the outside to finish second again War Emblem. Like A Hero rounded out the top three.
Following the 2001 Haskell win with Point Given, the owner-trainer combo became the first back-to-back Haskell winners in the race's storied history. |
