The newly created racing syndicate Final Turn Stables has seen some quick returns on their investments, with three winners this season at Monmouth, most recently with George Cross capturing the fourth race on Sept. 12.  For James Costabile, president and managing partner of the group, it was a fresh start for a new racing venture that has quickly expanded to 12 horses and has enjoyed a 27% win percentage.

“I’ve been involved in this business my whole life,” said Costabile, a 35-year-old resident of Wall, N.J.  “I’ve been with other groups and had horses before, but this one is completely different.”

            That difference is the model.

“We’re trying something new,” Costabile said.  “We’re giving the trainer complete freedom in deciding when and where to run and to take care of all costs and bills associated with maintaining the horses.  In return that trainer is getting a higher percentage of the winnings.  It’s not an attempt to reinvent the wheel, it’s just a new twist to shake things up and bring new people into the game.  They’ll start off with one investment and that’s it.”

That new twist has seen many new people flock to Final Turn, with claim slips being dropped in New Jersey, New York and Delaware over the past several months.

“We’ve attracted many new people to the sport and will continue to do so as we expand,” Costabile said.  “We’ve got a good group of horses at all levels.  It’s always great to win at Monmouth with Final Turn.  This is my home and we want to run here and win here.”
