Coco’s Wildcat tries the turf for only the second time in her career as she takes on eight other fillies and mares in Saturday’s $60,000 Blue Sparkler Stakes going five and a half furlongs.

“She has been doing really well here at Monmouth,” said trainer Kathleen O’Connell, who conditions the horse for Gilbert G. Campbell. “She ran a big effort on the turf as a baby at Laurel given that she was broke from the 13 post that day.”

The only other time Coco’s Wildcat ran on the turf was in Sept. 2014 in the Selima Stakes going five and a half furlongs where she dueled for the early lead before finishing third by two lengths behind Miss Bullistic.

Last time out in the Miss Woodford on July 19 at Monmouth, Coco’s Wildcat sat way off the blistering early pace of :21 1/5 for the quarter mile and :43 4/5 for the half mile set by Bustin Out before making a three-wide move on the far turn, but had to settle for second by three and three-quarter lengths behind Fusaichi Red.

Coco’s Wildcat has worked just once since her last start. The bullet came on August 2 where she went four furlongs in :48 1/5 over the fast Monmouth Park main track, which was the second fastest of the 42 horses that went four furlongs on that day.

“Its going to depend on how she breaks,” said O’Connell when asked about where Coco’s Wildcat would be early on in the race. “She does have speed, but doesn’t have to be on the lead. She does have some turf in her pedigree being out of a Sword Dancer mare.”

The 3-year-old filly by Wildcat Heir out of the Sword Dancer mare Coco’s for Real is one of six stakes winners set for the Blue Sparkler including Kathleen Demasi’s trainee Joya Real, who won last year’s Fort Monmouth, and Jane Cibelli’s Aquinnah, who most recently won the Sunset Stakes at Gulfstream Park in April.

Jose Ferrer will be aboard Coco’s Wildcat for the first time on Saturday. The Blue Sparkler will be race 11 on Saturday’s 12-race card. Gates open at 11:30 a.m., with first post at 12:50 p.m.
