Jagger, Inc.’s Oak Bluffs sat back off the quick early pace and found room on the rail late to take Friday’s $41,000 allowance/optional claiming feature at Monmouth Park.

Fast Flying Rumor and Deterrent raced out to an early speed duel, going :20 3/5 for the quarter and :43 1/5 for the half mile, before Oak Bluffs charged late to score the victory by a head.

Trained by Jamie Ness, Oak Bluffs covered the five furlongs over the “firm” turf course in :55 and paid $4.20, $3, and $2.40. Snowday completed the $36.80 exacta and paid $6 and $3.80. It was another two and a quarter lengths back to Deterrent, who paid $2.80 for show.

“The pace really set up perfectly for us,” said winning jockey Trevor McCarthy, who found the winners circle four times in Friday’s 10-race card. “Coming down the stretch, the hole we were going to split closed on us so we had to move to the rail. He had plenty left in the tank when we turned for home. He is a horse that gives you everything he has each time he runs.”

The 5-year-old gelding by Defrere out of the Disco Rico mare Disco Shaker now spots a career record of 8-3-1 in 18 career starts, including three straight wins at the meet.

Live racing continues at Monmouth Park on Saturday, July 25 – gates open 11:30 a.m., first post 12:50 p.m.
