Michael Dini trained Creaky Cricket cuts back in distance to five and a half furlongs for his second start of the season over the Monmouth Park turf as he goes for the upset in Sunday’s $60,000 Select Stakes.

“He’s been training really well,” said Dini, who conditions the horse for Ballybrit Stable LLC. “We know he likes the turf. I think the shorter distance may benefit him.”

The 3-year-old colt by Yesbyjimminy out of the Meadow Lake mare Serene Lake last worked on May 16 going five furlongs over the fast main track at Monmouth in 1:01 1/5.

In his first outing over the Monmouth turf at a mile and a sixteenth in a $42,000 allowance on May 23, Creaky Cricket dueled with a quick early pace before a multitude of closers caught him at the far turn, finishing ninth behind eventually winner Biedermeier.

“The jockey lost the irons two starts back and battled up front early in his last one so two tough races prior to this,” said Dini.

Creaky Cricket’s best races of 2015 have come on the front end at Tampa Bay Downs in January and March, where he finished second by less than a length in back-to-back $75,000 allowance/optional claiming races on the turf. Daniel Centeno was aboard for both of those trips and is back on Creaky Cricket for the Select.

“He is normally a quick horse out of the gate,” said Dini. “There seems to be a good amount of speed in the race so I don’t expect him to be up on the lead. If he can get a clean break, I think he will sit mid-pack and look for one good run.”

Early speed isn’t the only thing Creaky Cricket has to watch out for in the Select. The top two morning line choices, Element (2-1) and Souper Colossal (5/2), both won last time out coming from off the pace in turf sprints.

The Select will be race 11 in Sunday’s 12-race card. Gates open at 11:30 a.m. First post at 12:50 p.m.
