Our Year Back At Monmouth In Red Cross Stakes Monday

Posted Sunday, May 26, 2013

It’s been nearly one year since Our Year has visited the winner’s circle, that trip coming on July 21 right here at Monmouth Park.  She returns to the Jersey Shore in hopes of capturing her fourth lifetime victory in Monday’s $60,000 Red Cross Stakes.

“She loves it here,” said trainer Tim Hills.  “She needed her last race coming off the layoff and this looked like the right spot for her.  Two weeks is a little quick to come back, but she’s doing so well right now that we thought we’d give her a shot.”

That last race was May 13 at Parx, where she finished third as the 2-1 favorite in an allowance event at six and a half furlongs, a distance that Hills believes is just a little too far.
“Six furlongs is her distance,” said Hills.  “She ran well last out.  It was a good effort off the layoff.”

Our Year, a 5-year-old mare by Grand Slam out of the Boston Harbor mare Secret Crush, has won three of her 12 lifetime starts with two of those victories coming at Monmouth.  She broke her maiden at second asking in April of 2011 at Gulfstream and came back with a dominating performance in an entry level allowance at Monmouth that May.

Joe Bravo, 13-time Monmouth Park riding champion, will be aboard Our Year for the first time in the Red Cross.
