The distance of 1 3/8 miles over the grass may seem daunting, but Martita Sangrita seems well suited to the conditions of Saturday’s $60,000 Omnibus Stakes.

“It is her first time going that far, but we always wanted to try her because of her pedigree,” said Arnie Delacour, the assistant to wife Leigh. “With her pedigree, we’re excited about this race.”

The 5-year-old chestnut mare’s sire is Johar, who won the 2003 Breeders’ Cup Turf at 1 ½ miles and her maternal grand sire is Nureyev, the great European turf runner and sire. Last out, she won the $100,000 Red Carpet at Penn National on yielding turf and she’ll catch firm going, which she prefers, at Monmouth on Sunday.
