Trujillo Opens Lead in Jocks Race

Posted Wednesday, Jun 20, 2012

Elvis Trujillo, looking for his second consecutive and third overall top jockey award at Monmouth Park, has opened a substantial lead in the rider’s contest.  Through Sunday’s program, Trujillo has booted home 42 winners, 18 more than the 2010 leading Monmouth jockey Paco Lopez.

Trujillo, a 28-year-old native of Panama, was leading rider at Monmouth in 2009 and 2011.  Throughout his career he has ridden successfully in California, Florida, Kentucky, Illinois and New Jersey.  He captured the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint after piloting Maryfield to victory in 2007.

Rounding out the top five in the Monmouth Park standings are Joe Bravo (20 wins), Kendrick Carmouche (15 victories) and Angel Serpa (10 trips to the winner’s circle).

The 2012 Monmouth Park race meet runs through Sunday, Oct. 7.  As always, the highlight of the season will be the $1 million Haskell Invitational, set for July 29.
