The last time she was sent to the gate, My Sunshine Gal ran a solid second behind even-money favorite and gate-to-wire winner Maple Forest in the $60,000 Red Cross Stakes here on May 28, and on Sunday she’ll try to win her second career stakes race in the $60,000 Fort Monmouth for fillies and mares three and older.

            “She did run really well last time, but unfortunately, we had to meet Mr. (Todd) Pletcher’s horse (Maple Forest). But that’s racing,” said Mark Weir, the assistant to trainer Derek Ryan. “She turned in a solid effort to get second and came out of it in good order. Sunday’s race is a very good spot for her. I know she’ll give her best effort because she runs her heart out all of the time, every time.” 

            The 4-year-old Florida-bred daughter of West Acre and the Awesome Again mare Sunny Again will have Chuck Lopez back in the irons for the Fort Monmouth, which will be contested on the turf at 5 ½ furlongs. 

            On Saturday, eight three-year-old fillies will try six furlongs on the main track in the $60,000 Just Smashing Stakes. 

            Trainer Tony Dutrow sends out 5-2 morning line favorite Singlet and 4-1 choice Diminutive for separate owners and Jane Cibelli, Monmouth’s defending leading trainer and the first woman to take the honor, will run 3-1 second choice Busted Again. 

            Quik Flip, Defy Gravity, Srumdiddlyumptious, Salad Girl, and Spring Flower round out the field.
