Todd Pletcher was on the
backstretch this morning for a routine check of his 42-horse division stabled
here and the leading trainer in North America
said that at least one of his five nominees will run in the Grade 2 $200,000
Monmouth Stakes on June 10.
Hudson Steele, Joe Vann,
Queensplatekitten, Slow Pace and Turbo Compressor are under consideration for
the Grade 2 $200,000 Monmouth Stakes to be run at one mile and one eighth on the
“Hudson Steele (the winner
of the Grade 2 $300,000 Dixie Stakes at Pimlico last out) is a possible. It’s
either here or the (Grade 1 $500,000) Manhattan
(Handicap at Belmont on June 9) for him,” said Pletcher.
“But Turbo Compressor will be in the Monmouth.”
Turbo Compressor, a
four-year-old Florida-bred son of Halo’s Image, is dropping down from his last
effort in the Grade 1 $500,000 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill Downs
on the Kentucky Derby under card. Although in striking distance at the quarter
pole, he tired through the lane to finish eighth in the 11-horse
Hudson Steele, stabled at
Pletcher’s main base in New
York, is asserting himself as one of the top turf horses
in the country and has won two grass stakes at Pimlico in his 2012 outings.
