Already garnering rave reviews in his native Peru, 18-year-old rider Juan Eugenio Enriquez wants to further his career in the United States and has selected Monmouth as the place where he’d like to make his American debut and call home.

“He’s not an apprentice. He’s an up-and-coming young rider who is currently fourth in the standings at Hippodromo de Monterrico,” said agent Bruce Golub, who plans to take his book. “He’s very talented. He’s got good hands, is a good judge of pace, and he communicates well with horses. They tend to run for him. He’s got a lot of natural ability.”

Golub has enjoyed previous success with Peruvian jockeys. He represented Alan Garcia, now one of the top 20 riders in North America, when Garcia was just 17 years old and he also booked mounts for Alfredo V. Clemente when he was the fifth leading rider here in 2006. Clemente and Enriquez are currently riding at the Peruvian track.

“It’s not hard for a young rider to break in at this track as long as they have the talent. The trainers here keep an open mind and are amenable to using a new rider. This kid has the talent so I expect him to do well,” said Golub.
