On the heels of a successful meet at Tampa Bay Downs over the winter, Jorge Navarro has shipped his string to Monmouth Park for the racing season.

“I have a couple of nice grass horses and a lot of claimers in the $5,000 to $25,000 range,” said the 37-year-old trainer who has been out on his own for four years. “I do claim a lot and have been successful at it. But 99.9% of it is luck. Lately, the luck has been going my way.”

Navarro won with 27 of his 86 starters and had 17 seconds and 14 thirds at Tampa Bay this season. Lifetime, his horses have won almost $1.5 million and he has been in the winner’s circle 548 times.

“I’m a young guy. I headed up here because I decided that I wanted to try something new, try for a better clientele and try to get better horses,” he said. Monmouth is a great track and Mike (racing secretary Dempsey) and everyone have been great to me. I’m very happy and excited to be here and hope it all works out for the best.”
