Cibelli Returns to Defend Training Title

Posted Thursday, May 17, 2012

Jane Cibelli has been conditioning horses for decades but had never won a leading trainer title until last year, when she topped the standings here with 32 wins from 119 starts. After wintering at Tampa Bay Downs in Florida, she’s back with 40 horses and looking forward to another strong meet.

“I have high expectations, but it will be very hard to duplicate last year,” she said. “But I do have better horses in the barn. I have younger horses, including some very nice three-year-olds who are just getting good now and some two-year-olds who will show up later in the summer. Last year I did well claiming horses, but you’ve got to have a lot of luck on your side to do that.”

Cibelli got off to a good start, winning her first race of the meet on opening day last Saturday. Busted Again, a three-year-old daughter of Sharp Humor owned by Goodwood Racing LLC, romped in a $42,000 allowance with defending leading rider Elvis Trujillo in the irons.

“She won by nine lengths in 1:09.4 and she’s an improving filly. I’m pointing her toward the Just Smashing Stakes,” she said.

The $60,000 Just Smashing will be contested on June 16 at six furlongs on the main track.
