Uncle Benny, labeled by trainer Jason Servis as “one of my best 2-year-olds,” impressed in his career debut with a sharp 2½-length victory in a Maiden Special Weight race on Friday at Monmouth Park.

The Kentucky-bred son of Declaration of War-Celebrity Cat withstood early pressure from Bronzed for the opening three-eighths of the five-furlong race and still had plenty in reserve at the finish. He covered the distance in a snappy :57.41.

“I like him a lot. I think he has a chance to be a good one,” said Servis. “He should be able to run all day. And I think he’ll turf too. We’ll have to figure out what to do next. But you look at him and he looks the part of a good one.”

Owned by Ara Aprahamian and ridden by Paco Lopez, Uncle Benny paid $3.80 to win as the favorite.
