Cali Thirty Seven cuts back in distance for her first try at 5 ½ furlongs since her second career start in Sunday’s $60,000 Blue Sparkler Stakes on the turf.

“She’s been doing great,” said Joe Orseno, who conditions the horse for Crush Management & DJ Stable LLC. “She finally gets a chance to run and we get to keep her home and she seems to like the turf here.”

The 4-year-old filly by Eskendereya out of the Carson City mare Mama Tia finished ninth in the Miss Liberty Stakes at Monmouth on May 29, her most recent outing. Prior to that, she took the Powder Break Stakes at Gulfstream Park on April 30 in wire-to-wire fashion by a length and a quarter in her lone stakes victory.

Cali Thirty Seven’s only win over the Monmouth Park turf came against allowance company in July 2015 by two lengths in her signature wire-to-wire style.

She has worked four times since her start in the Miss Liberty. Her latest came on Aug. 7 when she went four furlongs in :52 2/5 over a fast main track.

“I don’t really mind the post,” said Orseno, about drawing the three hole. “She has good early speed going long, but there is a lot of speed in the race, so we will probably let her break and get her into a good position early in the race.”

Along with Cali Thirty Seven, there are four other stakes winners set to enter the gate in the Blue Sparkler led by last year’s winner Joya Real and graded stakes winner Lucy N Ethel who tries the turf for the first time after taking the Grade 3 Old Hat Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 2.

The Blue Sparkler is set as race 9 in Sunday’s 10-race card. Gates open at 11:30 a.m. with first post scheduled for 12:50 p.m.
