Bold Thunder returns to stakes company as he makes his inaugural start over the Monmouth Park turf against nine rivals in Saturday’s $60,000 My Frenchman Stakes going 5 ½ furlongs.

Bold Thunder is exiting an allowance event on July 17 at Laurel Park where he had to go five wide into the far turn after breaking slow to finish fourth by 2 ¾ lengths behind fellow My Frenchman entrant Pool Winner.

“He didn’t break good from the gate last race, but he finished well,” said Mike Farro, assistant trainer for conditioner Patricia Farro. “It showed that he probably doesn’t need the lead if he doesn’t break 100%, but he usually likes to be on the lead.”

Owned by Andrew Sulley, Bold Thunder last got to the winner’s circle in April 2015 when he took allowance company gate-to-wire at Pimlico for a three-length score.

Since the win, the 6-year-old horse by Bold n’ Flashy out of the Storm Creek mare Stormy Kristine has been stakes placed in the 2015 Jim McKay Turf Sprint at Pimlico as well as the Pennsylvania Governors Cup at Penn National, missing both by just a neck.

Bold Thunder has worked once over the Monmouth Park main track since his last outing. On July 17, he went three furlongs in :36 1/5, third fastest of the 22 horses that went the distance that day.

“We’ll see how he breaks and go from there,” said Farro. “I’m not going to give any special instructions.”

Emmanuel Esquivel will be aboard Bold Thunder for the first time in his career on Saturday.

To grab the My Frenchman title, Bold Thunder will have to beat two horses that are coming in off four or more straight wins. Mario Serey Jr. trainee Black Jet is undefeated for the trainer and has won five in a row dating back to February while Pool Winner, for Alan Goldberg, has tallied four straight wins beginning in November of 2015.

The My Frenchman is set as race 9 in Saturday’s 10-race card. Gates open at 11:30 a.m. with first post scheduled for 12:50 p.m.
