Rick Shanley’s Perpetual Novena sat just off pacesetter Bustin Out before powering past that rival and holding off the late charge of Presto Magic to win the first 2-year-old maiden special weight race of the 2014 Monmouth Park season by a length.

Trained by Eddie Plesa Jr., Perpetual Novena stepped the 4 ½ furlongs over a fast main track in :53 1/5 and paid $9.40, $3.80, $3.20.  Presto Magic completed the $22.60 exacta and paid $2.60, $2.60.  It was another three-quarters of a length back to Bustin Out, who paid $5 to show.

“She seemed like a really smart filly,” said winning rider Paco Lopez, after piloting his second winner of the day.  “I waited with her until the top of the stretch and then just let her go.”

A daughter of Majestic Warrior from the Omega Code mare Viola Blew By, Perpetual Novena earned $24,000 for her connections in winning her debut.

Live racing continues at Monmouth Park on Saturday, June 7 – gates open 11:00 a.m., first live post at 12:50 p.m.  In addition, Monmouth will beam-in all the simulcast action from Belmont Park and California Chrome’s shot at the Triple Crown.  First post at Belmont is 11:35 a.m.
