Just For Fun Stable LLC’s Street Gem took the lead around the far turn and held off the late charge of Jean’s Surprise to capture the $60,000 Desert Vixen Stakes at Monmouth Park on Saturday by just over a length.

Trained by Kathleen O’Connell, Street Gem covered the mile and a sixteenth over firm turf in 1:42 flat and paid $7.20, $4 and $2.60. Jean’s Surprise completed the $54.20 exacta and returned $6.80 and $3.40.  It was another three lengths back to Coarsegold, who paid $2.40 to show as the 13-10 favorite in the field of six 3-year-old fillies.

“She gets better every time I ride her. She looks more relaxed with every race. She gave me a perfect trip today. I asked her a bit around the 3/8 pole and she responded well. She went full speed at the top of the stretch when she switched leads and she took off.”

A daughter of Street Boss from the Lemon Drop Kid mare Nesselrode, Street Gem has won two straight at Monmouth, having captured the Revidere Stakes on June 23 in her last start.  She has now banked $118,940 for her connections.

Live racing continues at Monmouth Park on Sunday, July 28 for the signature event of the racing season – the $1 million William Hill Haskell Invitational.  A special 14-race program will be on tap with gates opening at 10:00 a.m. and first post slated for noon.
