Oceanport, N.J. – Vince Sprinkle’s Gospel Lesson took command out of the gate, was headed in the lane by Esporon before kicking clear of that rival inside the 1/8th pole and posting a length and a quarter victory in the $32,000 allowance/optional claiming feature at Monmouth Park on Saturday.

Ridden by Armando Ayuso, Gospel Lesson covered the mile over a fast main track in 1:40 flat and returned $8.80, $4.60 and $3.20.  Esporon completed the $34.60 exacta and paid $4.20 and $3.  It was another 4 ½ lengths back to Kid Sidney, who rallied to pay $2.60 to show.

“He’s a nice horse,” said Tom Morgan, assistant to trainer Bret Calhoun.  “They let him go slow fractions.  He doesn’t have to have the lead, but we got it and got it easily.  He’s very game and was a good claim.”

Gospel Lesson, who was claimed out of his last for $16,000, now sports a lifetime record of 6-4-1 from 26 career starts.  The 4-year-old gelding by Pulpit from the Royal Academy mare Royal Bean has won five of nine outings in 2012.

Live racing continues at Monmouth Park on Sunday, Sept. 30 – gates open 11:30 a.m., first post 12:45 p.m.
