Oceanport, N.J. – After sitting off the dueling leaders of Angel’s Tune and Purely Determined, Sabercat pounced on the pace-setting pair nearing the quarter-pole before opening up to a six-length win in the $75,000 Garden State Stakes at Monmouth Park on Sunday.

Trained by Steve Asmussen, Sabercat covered the mile and 70 yards in 1:41 4/5 and paid $3.60, $2.40 and $2.20 as the 4-5 favorite in the field of six 2-year-old colts.  Angel’s Tune held second, paying $5 and $4 and completing the $15.60 exacta.  Purely Determined was another neck back in third and returned $4.40 to show.

“My horse had speed, but there was a lot of speed in there,” said winning jockey Angel Serpa.  “I was told to sit just off the pace and come with one run and that’s exactly what I did.  He opened up in the stretch and did the whole thing pretty easily.”

Owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC, Sabercat earned his second win in five starts.  The son of Bluegrass Cat from the Forty Niner mare Miner’s Blessing has now banked $81,420 for his connections.

Live racing continues at Monmouth Park on Saturday, Oct. 8 – gates open 11:30 a.m., first post 12:50 p.m.  As always the racetrack is open seven days a week for simulcasting from across the country and around the globe.
