Paul A. Pompa Jr.’s Well Positioned fought hard all the way to the wire and came up a head in front of Gone Astray and Chirac in the $70,000 Frisk Me Now Stakes at Monmouth Park on Saturday.
Trained by Rick Dutrow Jr., Well Positioned covered the mile and 70 yards over a fast main track in 1:41 1/5 and returned $4.20, $3 and $2.40 as the favorite in the field of eight colts and geldings. Gone Astray rallied to complete the $20.20 exacta and paid $4 and $3.40. It was a nose back to pacesetter Chirac, who paid $2.40 to show.
“The trip was good,” said winning jockey Paco Lopez. “I tried to keep him relaxed early on and just waited as long as I could. The horse that was closing on the outside is a nice horse (runner-up Gone Astray) and I had to really ask mine for everything. He dug in and didn’t want to let that horse go by us.”
The Frisk Me Now win was the fifth in 10 starts for Well Positioned, a 4-year-old colt by Awesome Again from the Holy Bull mare Taxible. He has now earned $181,094 for his connections.
